Lippi sings Cannavaro praises
06/07/2006: Italy coach Marcello Lippi has hailed Fabio Cannavaro, saying he believes the Juventus man is the world's best defender.
Many pundits were writing off Italy ahead of the World Cup after below-par performances in their warm-up games for the tournament.
However, the Azzurri booked their place in the final when they beat hosts Germany in a last-four encounter.
Cannavaro has played a key role in Italy's march to Sunday's showpiece in Berlin, a fact not lost on Lippi.
He said: "Cannavaro is without a doubt the strongest defender in the world. I am really happy for him and for us."
Meanwhile, the final will mark a double landmark for the player himself, as he also celebrates a century of appearances for his country.
And Cannavaro cannot believe the way things have worked out, commenting: "As it happens, I will also make my 100th international appearance on Sunday - more than a dream, this is a miracle in my life."
