Lippi Old Trafford switch denied

07/07/2006: Manchester United have rubbished reports linking Italy coach Marcello Lippi with a coaching role at Old Trafford after the World Cup.

Speculation emanating from Italy claimed the former Juventus coach, who has guided the Azzurri to a World Cup final showdown against France in Berlin on Sunday, will quit the post after the game when his contract expires and immediately link up with the Red Devils.

The reports claimed Lippi will work with current United boss Sir Alex Ferguson before eventually taking over as manager when the veteran Scot steps down in the future.

A source close to Lippi was quoted as saying; "He is not looking for a lucrative contract since he has achieved success at the highest level. And working abroad is the only thing that interests him.

"He will not find it diminishing to work either alongside or under another manager."

However United have quickly denied the reports claiming there is not a shred of truth in them whatsoever. Therefore the likely outcome is Italian Federation commissioner Guido Rossi will offer Lippi a contract extension to keep him in charge of the national team for the 2008 European Championship.
