Lippi knew of German threat

02/07/2006: Italy boss Marcello Lippi insists he always felt hosts Germany would enjoy a successful tournament.
The Azzurri thrashed Jurgen Klinsmann's men 4-1 in a friendly prior to the World Cup which had many believing that the tournament hosts would struggle to make an impact at the summer showpiece.

However, Germany have proved everyone wrong on their march to the semi-finals, having won all their group games before cruising past Sweden to get to the quarter-finals. Argentina proved more of a test but Germany held their own before eventually triumphing in a penalty shoot-out to set up a last-four clash with Italy for the right to face Portugal or France in the final.

Lippi claims that he knew Germany would be a contender for the title and said: "I am not surprised at the way Germany are performing.

"I said in my interviews after the match in Florence that we should not read too much into the result.

"No-one is underestimating this German team. They started the tournament in difficult circumstances but have gone into the tournament with great enthusiasm.

"But we have no fear of them, respect yes, but no fear. It will be a great sporting occasion and it will be a very, very tough match."
