Lionel Messi
15/05/2006: Arguably the break-through player of the domestic season has been Barcelona's hugely talented Argentine, Lionel Messi.
Some have heralded the youngster as the next Maradonna, and although it may prove difficult to live up to those expectations, he has shown some recent form for Barcelona that suggests he will shine at the World Cup.
He wasn't at Buenas Aires-based side Newell's Old Boys for long before Barcelona came knocking.
Amazingly, at the age of 13 he made the trip across the Atlantic to work his way up through the ranks at the azulgranas.
He made his Barca debut at just 16 and has since made himself a regular fixture and one of the most exciting prospects in world football.
Argentina fans have been nervously waiting on news on an injury to the prodigal forward, but it now seems like Messi will make the tournament on Germany, and you can bet on him scoring an important goal or two.
