Lilian Thuram
18/05/2006: Lilian Thuram is considered by many to be the finest defender in the world and, despite his age, he is still putting in great performances.
He helped Juventus win the championship in Italy this year, even at the ripe old age of 34.
Not only has he been a top defender for his country, but he also played a key attacking role in their successful 1998 World Cup campaign. He scored twice during the semi-final against Croatia.
Thuram was stirred out of international retirement due to his nation's struggle to qualify for this summer's tournament.
A French side that had lost many of its key stars did not perform in the early stages of its qualifying group containing the likes of Switzerland, Israel and Ireland.
And Thuram was not the only one who was stirred into action. Claude Makelele and Zidane both pulled the blue jersey back on and secured France a place at the World Cup.
