Lehmann's the man
07/04/2006: Jurgen Klinsman has named Jens Lehmann as his first choice goalkeeper for the World Cup that starts on June 9 in his home country Germany.
Both Lehman and regular keeper Oliver Kahn were confident they would get the nod and claim the number one jersey in the opening game against Costa Rica.
The decision was made on Friday morning following discussions between Klinsmann, general manager Oliver Bierhoff, Andreas Kopke (the goalkeeping coach) and assistant manager Joachim Low.
Lehmann has been in splendid form for Arsenal this season while Kahn has made some recent clangers for his club Bayern Munich, which led many to believe that the Champion League semi-finalist would be selected as first-choice.
Bierhoff added: "The goalkeeper question has dominated discussions in the last weeks and the decision was extremely difficult for our coaches. I appeal to everyone to accept the decision and give both the team and Jens Lehmann their full support."
Kopke said: "Both goalkeepers have amazing ability. We are, however, convinced that Jens Lehmann is better suited to the way we like to see the game played."
An international since 1998, Lehmann has played 29 times for his country but has yet to start as the main keeper in an international tournament.
