Lagerback's defensive sadness

24/06/2006: Lars Lagerback was left ruing his side's defending Sweden crashed out of the World Cup, but praised his side's battling spirit.

Sweden saw Germany take the lead through two early Lukas Podolski strikes in a game that the hosts dominated.

And the Scandinavian side saw their task made all the harder Teddy Lucic was given his marching orders after being shown a second yellow card.

Lagerback thought that his side responded well to seeing their numbers reduced. He said: "It is difficult to beat anyone with 10 men, especially a team like Germany but my players showed a lot of character."

However, although pleased with his side's showing, he admitted that Sweden did not make it easy for themselves after conceding the two early goals.

He added: "I'm very proud of the way they played in the second half but we let in two easy goals at the beginning.

"After that it was very difficult for us."
