Koreans appoint new coach

25/06/2006: South Korea have named Pim Verbeek as the successor to coach Dick Advocaat, who stepped down following their World Cup exit.

Advocaat stepped aside on Friday following the Far East nation's defeat by Switzerland which put them out of the tournament.

However, the South Koreans have moved swiftly to appoint a replacement and have promoted Verbeek, who was Advocaat's assistant, to the top job giving the national set up some consistency.

Advocaat is now expected to take charge of Russian outfit Zenit St Petersburg.

The Korean Football Association say that Verbeek reject the overtures of several clubs in order to be persuaded to take their top job and confirmed that he had signed a two-year deal.

KFA spokesman Lee Young-moo said: "Verbeek has received offers to coach several professional and national teams, but he had a greater interest in the head coach job for the South Korean team, with which he has participated in two World Cup finals."
