Korean striker blow

11/04/2006: Star Korean forward Lee Dong-gook faces World Cup heartache for the second time in his career.

The 27-year-old suffered damage to his cruciate ligaments on Sunday playing for his club side Pohang Steelers with national coach Dick Advocaat in attendance.

Nicknamed, the Lion King, Gook has decided against surgery and will be undergoing a rehab programme in order to prove his fitness for the World Cup finals.

"Lee Dong-gook tore his right cruciate ligament during a K-League match on April 5," KFA medical chief Yoon Young-seol said.

"It's a serious injury to his right knee but Lee is determined to play at the World Cup and wants to follow a course of strengthening exercises instead of surgery, which would definitely rule him out."

It would be a shattering blow for the player who missed out on the last World Cup due to lack of form. In 1998 he became the youngest ever Korean player to play in a World Cup when appearing at the tournament in France.

He scored a number of important goals in qualifying and was expected to be one of Advocaat's first choices.
