Klinsmann sticks by striker selection
20/06/2006: Jurgen Klinsmann has stated Lukas Podolski will start against Ecuador on Tuesday despite his failure to score in two games for Germany.
The hosts go into their final group game against the South Americans, who have been one of the surprise packages of the World Cup, knowing anything less than a win will see them finish as group runners up.
Therefore Klinsmann is keen for Germany to make it three wins from three to give his side the best chance of progressing through the knockout stages.
However the media appear to have focused on Podolski's lack of goals as their chance to be critical of the squad in some form, but Klinsmann is standing by the Bayern Munich man to come good when it matters.
He said: "Lukas knows he has our full backing and I am sure he will start scoring sooner rather than later.
"We've been telling him not to worry, just concentrate on his game and it will all come right.
"Lukas is still on a learning curve, but he will start coming into his own as the tournament goes on."
The Polish-born forward is not concerned at the criticism and is looking forward to getting off the mark. He said: "I've no idea why people are levelling such criticism at us because we're not exactly doing too badly. I don't want to start setting records for not scoring, but I'm not too worried about my form."
