Klinsmann expects clean sweep

18/06/2006: Jurgen Klinsmann has told his Germany stars they must build their momentum for the second round by beating Ecuador and winning Group A.

The World Cup hosts have already seen off Costa Rica and Poland, courtesy of a last-gasp Oliver Neuville effort, to book their passage into the knockout stages of the tournament.

However the Germans are still sat in second spot in the group on goal difference after Ecuador's more convincing victories over the same sides. The two go head-to-head on Tuesday with Germany needing a win to top the group and face the runners up of Group B - either England or Sweden in the last 16.

As a result Klinsmann wants his side to build on their winning mentality by seeing off their South American opponents and go into the next match with confidence brimming.

He said: "We respect Ecuador, but want to win the group. So we will be taking the game very seriously."

He added: "To prove our philosophy, you need to have belief, and for that, you need to win games.

"I think we have now laid the foundations. We are strong and capable of achieving something at this World Cup."

Meanwhile Middlesbrough new boy Robert Huth is on standby to face Ecuador as Borussia Dortmund star Christoph Metzelder limped out of training on Saturday with a twisted right knee and is a doubt for the game.
