Kempes fires Riquelme broadside
12/06/2006: Current Argentina star Juan Roman Riquelme has been blasted by former international striker Mario Kempes.
Kempes was the star of the side that lifted the World Cup in 1978, winning the Golden Boot, but he feels that Riquelme, who was instrumental in both Argentina goals against the Ivory Coast in their opening group game which gave them a 2-1 win, plays the game at too slow a tempo while adding that he is not consistent enough at the highest level.
"Riquelme loves to have the ball at his feel," he said. "This is good when you are winning because you can make your opponent nervous.
"When you are drawing and you have to win he is too slow for his own team, and when you are losing, well, you watch him on the television and he makes me want to throw my television out of the window.
"Riquelme is not a constant player - he is never going to play well for an entire match, he will have his good and bad moments.
"Personally I think that Argentina will have to depend on what the forwards do, they have good movement when attacking and this will be vital."

Comments on: Kempes fires Riquelme broadside
13/06/2006: Kempes is very correct, I think Pablo Aimar can be more active and add a bit of speed to the team.
14/06/2006: Right, but I think Riquelme is better than Cambiasso and Maxi Rodriguez. My opinion in midfield is that Messi and Aimar are good.
14/06/2006: Where are Messi, Tevez and Aimar?
14/06/2006: No way, he might be slow, but he holds the ball best , creates goals, scores goals and defenders fear him, so they all mark him. I think if Messi and Tevez can play too, with Crespo and Riquelme, we could be unstoppable. Mascherano as holding, and maybe either Aimar, Maxi or L.Gonzalez as another midfielder. Aimar isn't what he use to be, so no way could he replace Riquelme.
