Kahn set to quit

10/05/2006: Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn will retire from international football after this year's World Cup after being named as number two behind Jens Lehmann.

Kahn did not hide his displeasure when he received the news of his reserve role from coach Jurgen Klinsmann, but has subsequently agreed to act as understudy to the Arsenal keeper.

The news was confirmed by Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinze Rummenigge.

"We were really worried about him. He was just floored. But he reacted well. He's going to quit the national team after the World Cup and concentrate on Bayern Munich," Rummenigge told Bild newspaper.

Kahn skippered Germany to the final of the last World Cup in South Korea and Japan, and was named one of the players of the 2002 tournament.

Klinsmann, on his appointment, immediately stripped Kahn of the captaincy and also revealed he would have to fight it out with Lehmann for the number one jersey.

The two keepers have been rotated since then, but it is thought the Arsenal goalkeeper's performances in the Champions League this season have sealed his place.
