Kahn lauds Lehmann

29/06/2006: Oliver Kahn has spoken of his frustration at being kept out of the Germany side by Jens Lehmann but heaped praise on the Arsenal man.

The 37-year-old Bayern Munich international was Germany's number one shot-stopper for over a decade but he has lost his place in Jurgen Klinsmann's side during the World Cup finals.

Lehmann and Kahn were involved in heated exchanges in the two years building up to the finals about who should be the first-choice keeper and, while Kahn still feels he should be number one, he accepts that his rival has been influential in Germany's charge to the quarter-finals.

He said: "Jens's performance has been absolutely flawless.

"He's been a pillar of serenity and run things from the back with clarity. It's important to give the back four a sense of security and that's what he's doing.

"We've had three straight clean sheets and that speaks for itself."

On the prospect of continuing to watch the action on the substitutes' bench, Kahn added: "It's not always been easy for me because I'm first and foremost a sportsman and want to play. But my biggest goal is to win the World Cup, if not as a player than as someone who can do everything he can to help this team get it.

"I'm someone who's programmed for success, to be the number one. These weeks are not always easy for me.

"I'm only human. You've all played sport yourselves and know what drives you is a desire to play. Anyone satisfied sitting on the bench should be sent home. Naturally, we're frustrated on the bench. But we have enough inner strength to cope with that."
