John Terry

07/06/2006: John Terry's place in the starting 11 for England wasn't always as assured as it is now.

It was not that long ago that the Chelsea captain had to wait for an opportunity with Sol Campbell and Rio Ferdinand favoured by England coach Sven Goran Eriksson.

But the quality of the central defender meant that in the end he just could not be ignored.

He has quickly built up a reputation as one of the best defenders in world football and he is still only 25 years old.

The tournament in Germany will be his first World Cup, but few England fans will be worried that the pressure will have an effect on Terry.

The London-born player has already won two Premier League championships under the guidance of manager Jose Mourinho, who rates his captain very highly.

But Terry is not only dominant in his own box. He is always a threat from set pieces in the opposing penalty area, as the recent qualifiers showed.

With the best crosser of the ball in the world David Beckham delivering balls for him to attack, don't bet against Terry getting his name on the score sheet.

Comments on: John Terry

16/06/2006: I know it was only T&T but what an immense display. If he wasn't on the pitch today then I think they could have nicked one. Surely MOTM.I know we say we are in abundance with centre halves, but are Ferdinand, Carragher, King and Campbell really in this man's league? As a ball player player he may not be the best, but distribution isn't terrible, and his stopping, tackling and ariel threat ranks him the best in England bar none.Carries on this form in the tournament against the big cheeses, then could prove himself to be the best in the world.

16/06/2006: Carragher has put in some world class performances for Liverpool as a central defender.
