Japan struggle in victory

05/06/2006: Japan put up a lack lustre display to beat European minnows Malta 1-0 in their latest warm-up fixture.

Striker Keiji Tamada scored the only goal of the game inside two minutes.

Both leading strikers Atsushi Yanagisawa and Naohiro Takahara were forced to miss the match with minor injuries.

Malta proved a hard team to break down with Japan guilty of some bad finishing.

Japan coach Zico was disappointed in the performance.

He said: "We made a lot of mistakes. We didn't look good.

"We looked good against Germany the other day and couldn't win, but today we looked bad and won. We want to learn from this."

Japan's first World Cup game is against Australia on June 12.
