Zico names Japan roster

15/05/2006: There were few surprises when Japan coach Zico handed in his definitive World Cup squad to Fifa on Monday.

The main surprise was the exclusion of Tatsuhiko Kubo who is replaced by the inexperienced Seiichiro Maki.

Premiership stars Hidetoshi Nakata and Junichi Inamoto are included having missed Japan's disapointing Kirin Cup experience where they failed to beat Scotland.

Other European-based players on the plane to Germany include Shunsuke Nakamura of Celtic, Koji Nakata from Swiss side FC Basel and the Germany based striker Naohiro Takahara.

"This is a roster the people of Japan can be proud of," Zico said.

"We will be judged on our results. The buck stops with me."

Japan face a difficult group containing Australia, Croatia and Brazil.
