Japan suffer Kirin Cup defeat

11/05/2006: Bulgaria scored in the opening and closing minutes to overcome a battling Japan side in the opening game of the Kirin Cup in Tokyo on Tuesday.

Svetoslav Todorov shocked Japan after just 53 seconds, scoring with a close range effort.

Striker Seiichiro Maki equalised after 76 minutes, boosting his claims for a World Cup place with a third goal in eight games.

Hristo Yanev nabbed a late winner for Bulgaria with a free-kick from well outside the box beating goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi's at the far post.

Japan, without their Europe-based players for both games, take on Scotland at the weekend in their final home match before leaving for Europe on May 26.

The game against the Scots will be Japan coach Zico's last chance to check on his players before naming his World Cup squad on May 15.

Japan faces a difficult group in the finals having to face Brazil, Croatia and Australia in the opening phase of the competition.
