Italy wait on Nesta
23/06/2006: Defender Alessandro Nesta is a doubt for Italy's second round tie with Australia after suffering a groin injury against Czech Republic.
The AC Milan stopper was forced to hobble out of Thursday afternoon's 2-0 win against the Czechs and is due to undergo a scan at some stage before the weekend to assess how bad the problem is.
However team doctor Enrico Castellacci is not holding out too much hope that Nesta will be ready in time for Monday afternoon's encounter with the Socceroos in Kaiserslautern.
He told Sky Italia: "He suffered a relapse of the problem he had in the past. On Friday he will undergo scans and we will see.
"Certainly, it's difficult doing a prognosis now and I think his presence for the next match is difficult, too."
If Nesta is out Marco Materazzi, who scored the first goal in Italy's win over the Czechs to secure top spot in Group E, will keep his place in the side.
Midfielder Daniele De Rossi will also miss the game and could be ruled out for the rest of the World Cup after being handed a four-game ban by FIFA for his elbow on Brian McBride in last Saturday's 1-1 with USA.
He sat out the win over the Czech Republic and will not be able to feature again until the final if the Italians make it that far in the tournament.
Meanwhile AS Roma's 29-year-old playmaker Francesco Totti has admitted that he could retire from international football after the World Cup finals.
He said: "We will talk after the end of the World Cup. Let's hope after July 9."
