Italy play out bore draw

03/06/2006: Italy played out a tired goaless draw against Ukraine in their latest World Cup warm-up fixture.

Italian coach Marcello Lippi made four changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Switzerland in midweek though the side coudn't find the net despite having many chances.

Daniele De Rossi replaced Francesco Totti but it proved a fruitless night for the strikers who included Luca Toni, Alberto Gilardino and Alessandro Del Piero.

Despite leaving star striker Andriy Shevchenko Ukraine matched the Italian throughout the game.

Andriy Husin and Anatoliy Tymoschuk went close for the Ukraine.

Despite the disappointing draw, the watching Shevchenko believes Italy are still capable of doing well at Germany 2006.

The recent Chelsea said: "I wouldn't judge Italy on this performance, as they played only three days ago against Switzerland in a tough test and are tired after training regularly. We shouldn't put pressure on the players, who are doing very well up until now."

Coach Lippi remained unconcerned his side has not peaked at this stage.

"We don't have to be in top form now. That has to come at the World Cup, and not even in the first games, but the midpoint," the Italian said.

Italy will play their first game in the tournament on the back of an 18-match unbeaten run.
