Italy boss gets backing

10/10/2006:      Fabio Cannavaro says he has faith in Roberto Donadoni despite some average performances by Italy under their new coach.

The Azzurri have been heavily criticised in the press for their displays after winning the World Cup in Germany last summer.

However, the skipper is backing Donadoni to get things right in the end, saying: "We didn't play the best football at the World Cup either.

"Our group spirit and the ability to make the most of our characteristics made the difference in Germany."

Italy returned to wining ways on Saturday against Ukraine, after two deafest and a draw under Donadoni, and the Real Madrid star added: "We are at an important time regarding our fitness right now.

"Ukraine only tested us with a number of long range efforts, while creating just one real scoring opportunity."

Meanwhile, Donadoni's predecessor, Marcello Lippi, who masterminded Italy's World Cup triumph, is also backing the Azzurri to come good.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday's qualifier with Georgia, he said: "I'm happy for the coach and the boys following the win against the Ukraine.

"Donadoni is an excellent bloke and it is impossible that this group of players, under his guidance, will fail to achieve some important results."
