Iran rocked by 'bigamist' revelation
19/04/2006: Iran soccer hero Mehdi Mahdavikia has got himself into trouble in the German press when it was revealed he was a bigamist.
The revelations in German tabloid Bild tell the account of Mahdavikia returning to Iran last December and marrying Samira, though he had married his first wife 8 years ago.
The situation came to a head when Samira turned up at Mahdavikia's club Hamburg claiming she was his wife.
"I introduced myself to another player's wife as Mrs Mahdavikia," Samira said to the paper. "But the other woman replied, 'I know Mrs Mahdavikia. You are not her.'"
Hamburg Football Club released a statement in which the player agreed he had made a "big mistake".
"My wife is sticking by me. I was duped," he concluded.
