Hiddink blasts Italy

27/06/2006: Australia coach Guus Hiddink has blasted Italy's style of play and says his side were robbed by a controversial penalty.

The Socceroos looked to be heading for extra-time against Italy in Monday's second-round clash but, with the scores level at 0-0, Lucas Neill was adjudged to have brought down Fabio Grosso in the box and Francesco Totti slotted home the injury-time penalty.

It was a decision that angered Dutchman Hiddink who felt Australia controlled the game even before the Italians were reduced to ten men when Marco Materazzi was harshly sent off just after the break.

"Even when Materazzi was on the park we controlled parts of the game and then when he were sent off, we assumed full control," a disappointed Hiddink revealed.

"Then we fully dominated against a team that is much more highly ranked than us, before we got caught out in the last minute and if you see the replay there is no doubt it wasn't a penalty."

Hiddink also took a moment to hit out at Italy's negative tactics and says there was only one team trying to play football.

"We tried to play another style, a style that is more attractive for the spectators," he added. "The Italians wanted to play defensively - they don't think about attractive football, they just think about the result."
