Hamburg enter Saviola race

01/08/2006: Hamburg have joined Bolton and Panathinaikos in the race to sign Barcelona striker Javier Saviola. The 24-year-old is still contracted to the Spanish champions despite spending the last two seasons away from the Nou Camp and his future at the moment is very much up in the air.

A transfer seems the likeliest option with a number of clubs linked with a move, although Barcelona have admitted that he may stay at the club even though he may not command regular first-team football.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger denied that he wanted to sign the Argentina international, despite claims made by Saviola's agent that he sought a move to north London, while Greek giants Panathinaikos have put an offer on the table.

Bolton have also been linked with a raid as have Newcastle but now the latest reports suggest Bundesliga outfit Hamburg have entered the fray.

The German side have made contact with Barcelona asking for information about a transfer while the fact that they can offer Saviola Champions League football this season may sway the young Argentine's decision.

Meanwhile, Thomas Doll is reportedly close to clinching a deal for Kaiserslautern's want-away striker Boubacar Sanogo.

The 23-year-old, who scored 10 goals in 24 games for the Red Devils last season, saw a move to Sochaux collapse last week but is now poised to join Hamburg ahead of the club's League Cup clash with Werder Bremen on Tuesday.
