Gilardino predicts summer success
04/05/2006: Italian hitman Alberto Gilardino is looking forward to the World Cup and feels he can play a major part in his team's success.
The 23-year-old has enjoyed a fine first season with Milan, netting 17 goals in Serie A this season after moving from Parma last summer.
Alberto Gilardino could not find his goalscoring touch in the Champions League in his club's ill-fated bid, and failed to find the back of the net for last season's runners-up.
But the precocious youngster is full of confidence going into Fifa World Cup 2006 and feels he will put the disappointment of his goal drought in Europe's most important club competition behind him when he runs out for Italy.
"I had my chances to score in the Champions League but I was unlucky," he said. "I think the goals will come this summer with the national team.
"It's incredible to have the chance to play in my first World Cup at 23. This is a great opportunity and I want to make a name for myself at international level.
"I have confidence in my own abilities and I think that I could be the man of the World Cup."
