Gerrard issues England warning

16/06/2006: Steven Gerrard says England cannot win the World Cup without a big improvement and insists they have to step up a gear against Sweden.

The Liverpool skipper scored his first-ever World Cup goal on Thursday as England sealed their place in the last 16 of the tournament with a 2-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago.

It was not a convincing display though from Sven-Goran Eriksson's men and once again the media and fans alike were still left asking the question if Gerrard can play alongside Frank Lampard in the midfield.

Gerrard has admitted that improvements must be made as England prepare for the knockout stages, saying: "The result may have been a good one, but we need to play more as a team."
