Germany confirm Ballack absence
07/07/2006: Germany will be without captain Michael Ballack for the third/fourth-place play-off clash with Portugal because of a knee injury.
The Chelsea new boy has suffered an inflamed left knee and will not be risked so he joins defenders Per Mertesacker and Arne Friedrich in being ruled out of the game in Stuttgart.
Goalkeeper Oliver Kahn should skipper the side in Ballack's absence, with Germany boss Jurgen Klinsmann confirming the Bayern Munich legend will start ahead of number one Jens Lehmann.
