Germans fear England clash Hargreaves
20/06/2006: Owen Hargreaves claims host nation Germany are wary of England and are looking to avoid a second-round showdown with the Three Lions.
The Canadian-born midfielder, who plies his trade in Germany's Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, is set to make his first start for England in Tuesday's Group B decider against Sweden to determine who plays either Germany or Ecuador in the last 16 this weekend.
England and Germany must either both win their respective groups or finish second to avoid a showdown and Hargreaves claims Jurgen Klinsmann's side will be doing all they can to ensure they face the Swedes as opposed to Sven-Goran Eriksson's men.
The 25-year-old said in the Daily Star: "I've been in contact with (Philipp) Lahm and (Bastian) Schweinsteiger.
"They're very excited they got off to a good start and Philipp has been one of the big stars so far. I think they're looking forward to their next game, but probably not to the possibility of playing us.
"If you look at the individuals in our teams and their team, I'd back us to beat them. If I was them, I wouldn't want to play England.
"We've got incredible individual talent across the pitch and every one of them can decide the game. That's why I think we're such a dangerous team.
"Germany might think they can beat England. But when you look at the whole tournament, you can never say.
"The World Cup is about having the best team, not necessarily having the best players.
"We've got a great team and I fancy our chances against any side. But the next game is always the biggest and this is a great opportunity for us to qualify in first place."
