World Cup German Helmet causes fury

01/06/2006: Fifa may have a cuddly lion as their mascot but it is the German helmet that will be most countries symbol of patriotism at this year's World Cup.

Each country has their own custom designed World Cup helmet with the English one bearing the logo "Come On England".

The idea has spread globally but will be used more by Germany's near neighbours especially countries invaded by the Germans during WWII - Holland, France and Poland.

The has caused a furore in Holland especially with the Dutch FA refusing to sanction them and then banning them from football stadiums.

Entrepreneur Florian Van Laar whose company is busy producing the Dutch German helmets said: "It is meant as a joke. The Germans are not meant to have a sense of humour, but we Dutch do have one.

"We are getting calls from all over Europe, even from those who have not even qualified for the tournament. After all, the Germans invaded most countries, so people want to wear these.

"If they think this is provocation, the only thing I can say is, now you know how we feel."

German police are under instructions to first warn and then arrest anybody using the banned nazi salute but English fans will be able to sing World War II songs such as Dambusters and the Great Escape as well as wearing the provocative helmets.

The German slogan for this year's World Cup is "Time to make friends".
