Gattuso fitness boost
15/06/2006: Italy team doctors are confident that Gennaro Gattuso will be fit to return to action in the clash with the USA on Saturday.
The 28-year-old was forced to sit out Italy's opening Group E encounter with Ghana as he is still struggling with a thigh problem he picked up towards the end of the season with AC Milan.
It was thought that the former Rangers man would be out of action until at least Italy's third group match against the Czech Republic on June 22 but team doctor Enrico Castellacci revealed that he has a chance to face the Americans in Kaiserslautern.
"Gattuso had some further exams, and his situation will continue to be monitored," he revealed. "He will work 50 per cent with the rest of the group and the other 50 per cent will be personalised, but we are optimistic."
Should Gattuso be passed fit, it will be further good news for coach Marcello Lippi, as influential striker Francesco Totti has also been passed fit to face Bruce Arena's men.
