Frings faces Fifa probe
03/07/2006: Germany midfielder Torsten Frings is to be investigated by Fifa for his role in the trouble that followed the quarter-final.
The Germans were celebrating their penalty shoot-out victory over Argentina when a brawl broke out, apparently triggered by Leandro Cufre's kick at Per Mertesacker.
Fifa had earlier said that no action would be taken against German players but television footage appears to show Frings lashing out at Argentina forward Julio Cruz and Fifa have now demanded an explanation.
The host nation are preparing for their semi-final against Italy on Tuesday and Fifa want to sort out the situation prior to the game.
"Because of the urgency of the situation, a decision will be announced by the disciplinary committee on Monday afternoon," a Fifa spokesman said.
Cufre received a red card for his part in the fracas so Frings faces the possibility of being banned for Germany which would be a major blow as he has been outstanding in the middle of the field alongside Michael Ballack.
Argentina's Maxi Rodriguez is also under investigation for 'an apparent attack on Bastien Schweinsteiger'.
