French keeper row erupts

25/05/2006: Goalkeeper Gregory Coupet stormed back into the French training squad less than an hour after packing his bags and leaving following a row with coach Raymond Domenech.

Coupet feels an injustice has been done by his naming as second choice behind Fabian Barthez as the holder of Les Blues' gloves.

After an impressive season under Gerard Houllier at Lyon, the 32-year-old felt he deserved his place between the posts and has been unable to hide his disappointment.

The former St Etienne man reportedly left the training camp after an argument with Domenech about Barthez's attitude.

Barthez had allegedly failed to complete a training run up a mountain, complaining of sore shins, and his non-appearance at a team meal seemed to be the final straw for Coupet.

He backed his bags and left only to return an hour later.

His club chairman Jean-Michel Aulas confirmed that Coupet had taken the snub personally.

"I have been informed but I cannot really talk about this," he told L'Equipe.

"I think the fire is now extinguished. I know that Greg was extremely down.

"What is happening is very hard to cope with for Greg but it is in the team's interest that Greg holds on."
