Francesco Totti
09/05/2006: Francesco Totti has become such an important player to Italy because of his versatility. He is not a straight forward striker but can also play in front of the midfield, linking up play and creating chances for others.
The Roman also has the ability to deliver a wicked dead ball and has been known more than once to score from free kicks.
At 29, he should be in the prime of his career, but the talisman is recovering from surgery after breaking his leg while playing for AS Roma in February. Although he will be fit to play in the summer, the Italians will be hoping he hasn't lost any match-sharpness.
He has shown he can perform on the big stage, securing the man of the match trophy despite being on the losing side in the final of the European Championships in 2000.
The Azzurri will be looking to progress from a tough group including Ghana, the US and the Czech Republic.
Totti will have to avoid the controversy that saw him banned for several matches during the last World Cup finals however, after he spat at an opposing player.
He has also been sent off in the past for diving, something referees are rumoured to be trying to stop during the tournament in Germany.

13/06/2006: I don't think he played well against Ghana, he was way below his standards. He is still not 100 percent fit and there's room for improvement. He's the key player for Italy, that's for sure. I'm Italian so I've seen him play really really well this season (before the broken leg injury).
13/06/2006: Didn't play exceptionally well, and I don't think much of his barber! Enjoy watching him play when he's on top form. Hope he has a good World Cup.
29/06/2006: Italy are on their way to grab a world cup. He is like a Roberto Baggio in 1994...still remembered Italy vs Nigeria in the Rose Bowl in June 94. Italy played with 10 men and Baggio made a comeback similar to Totti.

05/07/2006: Italy is well on their way to winning the World Cup now after defeating Germany. We will see how he plays in the finals.
