France urged to take second chance

23/06/2006: France coach Raymond Domenech has told his players they must defeat Togo and progress to the last 16 to wipe away the memories of 2002.

The 1998 word champions require a two-goal victory on Friday evening in Cologne to be certain of progressing, while any win would be sufficient if there is an outright winner in the Switzerland South Korea Group G encounter.

However a draw or defeat against the Africans would see France crash out of the tournament at the group stage for the second successive World Cup finals after their woeful showing in Japan and South Korea four years ago.

Domenech is refusing to be negative and sees the game against Togo as the perfect chance for the players to put right the wrongs of 2002.

He said: "It's extraordinary that we are in the same situation as in 2002 when we also had to score two goals in our final game.

"It's very rare in life you get a second chance like this. Very few people get the chance to prove that it was not an accident and to put something right and we must now take that chance because we are fortunate to have it."

France will be without the suspended Zinedine Zidane and Eric Abidal so Mikael Silvestre comes into the side, while Thierry Henry will be partnered in attack by David Trezeguet as Domenech adopts a more attack-minded 4-4-2 formation.
