FIFA to look at Berlin brawl
01/07/2006: Fifa are set to launch an investigation into the on-pitch fracas which took place after Germany's quarter-final victory over Argentina.
Argentina substitute Leandre Cufre was handed a red card for his part in the post-match incident, with claims that he kicked out at Germany centre-back Per Mertesacker.
The majority of players from both squads then got involved in a melee in the middle of the pitch, as the German fans celebrated their side's victory after penalties.
Germany assistant coach Oliver Bierhoff was among those at the centre of the controversy, saying afterwards: "Fans have shown they can get on with each other. We should be able to do the same as sportsmen.
"It's a shame that in a game like a quarter-final such pictures end up getting sent around the world."
Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann put the trouble down to the intensity of the game, adding: "I'd like to remind people that in football there is so much tension, so many emotions and if it goes all the way to penalties someone can lose control."
