Faint hope for Smicer

23/05/2006: Vladimir Smicer is in danger of missing the finals in June after failing to recover from a knee injury as well as expected.

The ex-liverpool star who scored a vital goal in his team's Champion Legue victory in 2005 missed the last few months of the season at Bordeaux with a knee problem.

The situation has worsened to such an extent that Czech coach Karel Bruckner has called up Glasgow Rangers midfielder Libor Sionko to cover in case the former Lens attacking midfielder fails to recover.

Things don't look good for the player who will be 33 on Wednesday.

"The investigation revealed that Vladimir has a haematoma in his muscle. It doesn't hurt him much but it is a complication of the former treatment," Czech team doctor Jiri Fousek said.

"Laser, drainages, special bandages, we will try out all possible options. But you will not see him on the pitch until the end of the training camp.

"It seems unlikely that he would play in any of the friendlies before the World Cup."

The Czech Republic have three friendly games organised. On May 26 they have a run out against fellow qualifiers Saudia Arabia in the Austrian city Innsbruck followed by meeting another qualifier Costa Rica in Jablonec four days later. Trinidad, who will play England in the World Cup proper, come to Prague on June 3.
