Fabregas calls for calm

18/06/2006: Cesc Fabregas has urged Spain's young squad not to get carried away by their great start to the World Cup ahead of the Tunisia clash.

The 19-year-old Fabregas has spoken out after hearing a plethora of praise over the side's 4-0 opening Group H victory against the highly-fancied Ukrainians last Wednesday.

Spain will line-up against against the Tunisians in Stuttgart on Monday evening looking to try and book their passage into the knockout stages with a game to spare, but Fabregas is wary of the players becoming complacent after their good performance in their previous game.

On a personal level the Arsenal man says he is using last season's run to the Champions League final and battle for a fourth-place Premiership finish to help him cope with the pressure facing the Spain squad.

He said: "The most important thing is to have the confidence to do what you want to and that way you do not fail.

"With the Spain national team we are also very united and conscious that we have to battle to the end.

"Arsenal performed very well at tough times with the injuries they had and it meant the young and inexperienced players had to be called on.

"We had an incredible year getting to the final of the Champions League and finishing fourth in the Premier League and I have learnt a lot."

He added: "The World Cup is the most important thing in football. It is the highest level that a player can play at and we have all worked very hard to get here.

"We have a young national team and it is important that now we all stay calm. We had a good game against the Ukraine but we cannot afford to get carried away."
