Everton sign England striker

30/05/2006: Andrew Johnson has completed his transfer to Everton from Crystal Palace for £8.6 million.

The player, tipped to replace Wayne Rooney in the England squad, turned down a number of Premiership clubs to sign for Everton.

Blues boss David Moyes had been in a fight for the 25-year-old with Wigan, Bolton and Portsmouth, but it was the lure of Everton that proved too much for Johnson.

He said: "I've decided that my footballing future lies at Goodison Park.

"I believe that Everton will give me the best opportunity to win major honours and again represent England at senior level.

"I find the prospect of playing for one of the biggest names in British football impossible to resist," he said to icliverpool.
