Essien World Cup agony
20/05/2006: Black Stars' leading player Michael Essien has had surgery on his foot and may miss part of the World Cup.
The Chelsea midfielder who also missed the African Cup of Nations through injury is expected to be unable to kick a ball for at least two weeks.
Essien is also likely to miss Ghana's pre-World Cup friendlies against Turkey, Jamaica and South Korea.
Michael Essien had been missing from the Black Stars training camp in the Austrian village of Seeboden, with no official explanation given by the Ghana Football Association.
Essien is believed to have played with the injury for Chelsea until the Premiership was secured.
