England 1 v Ecuador 0

26/06/2006: David Beckham was the match winner for England sending them through to the quarter-finals despite a less than convincing performance.
Beckham has become the first player for England to score in three different World Cup finals with a typical, trademark free-kick on 60 minutes bringing a huge relief for the travelling army of English fans.
Ecuador had the best chance of the first-half after just 11 minutes when John Terry failed to find Paul Robinson with a headed back-pass. Carlos Tenorio was through on goal but an excellent last gasp challenge from Ashley Cole deflected the ball onto the crossbar.
England had just one shot on target in the first half, a hopeful 20 yard strike from Frank Lampard on 27 minutes. Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard provided the two other attempts on goal, none of which troubled the keeper and sailed harmlessly over the bar.
Beckham's inch-perfect 25-yard free-kick lifted the England side as they pushed forward in search of a crucial second. But Frank Lampard looks to have left his shooting boots at home as he was gifted two great opportunities and was unable to convert either.
Nevertheless, England are through to the last eight but they will know an much improved performance against Portugal or Holland in the next round.
