England vs. Sweden

21/06/2006: England progress to the next round as Group B winners to set up a showdown with Ecuador after a nervy second half display in Cologne.

A stoppage time equaliser from Henrik Larsson denied England victory after a tense second 45 minutes. A long throw caused chaos in England's defence as Larsson broke free in the box to prod the ball over the line in the 91 minute.

England had made a good start to the game and looked to be full of confidence despite losing Michael Owen after only a minute with a twisted knee. Ashley Cole and Joe Cole looked particularly threatening as they linked up down the left and it was Joe Cole who opened the scoring on 34 minutes with a superb 35-yard strike.

England began the second half in the same way but we were rocked on 51 minutes when Marcus Allback flicked Tobias Linderoth's corner into the roof of the net to level the scores.

England looked -shocked and struggled to regain their composure as Sweden went close to taking the lead on more than one occasion.

It was against the run of play that England got their second goal as Joe Cole crossed for Gerrard, with the Liverpool man heading past Swedish goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson to claim what looked like the winner before Larsson struck in the dying moments.

A draw is enough to see England through to the next round however and, as Group B winners, they avoid a showdown with Germany.
