England vs. Ecuador

Support your team with real music tones!26/06/2006: Before the World Cup, England fans would have dismissed a second round game against South American outfit Ecuador as an easy tie and one that their side would have no problems dispatching from the competition.

Yet England's performances during the three group matches have far from inspired confidence. On the contrary, supporters of England are probably more pessimistic about their team's chances than ever.

Unconvincing wins against Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago followed by a poor defensive display in their 2-2 draw with Sweden have meant that some have now abandoned all hope of England winning the World Cup for the second time in their history.

Combined with the fact that star striker Michael Owen's Wold Cup is over after a nasty knee injury and it appears as if some fans might do well to put some money on Ecuador springing a surprise.

The Ecuadorians certainly have some pedigree when it comes to upsetting big teams. Who would have bet on them beating Brazil during qualification? Even fewer would have put money on them beating Argentina during the same campaign.

Yet despite these victories, teams keep on underestimating the side. Poland seemed to do this during the first group match. Poland were favourites to beat Ecuador going into the game, but the South Americans looked fitter, faster and technically more gifted during their 2-0 win.

But England will take heart in the fact that a German side devoid of world class talent managed to beat Ecuador 3-0, although Ecuador rested five players for the fixture.

Aston Villa defender Ulises De La Cruz has already warned that he will be gunning for England star Wayne Rooney.

The striker has only just returned for his country after recovering from a broken foot sustained while playing for Manchester United against Chelsea at the end of the domestic season.

Frank Lampard will be hoping to finally find the back of the net against Ecuador. Having found himself in good positions and recording more shots than any other player in the World Cup, the Chelsea midfielder is yet to find the back of the net.
