Ecuador send shamen to chase away evil spirits

26/04/2006: Ecuador have sent a shamen to banish evil spirits ahead of the Fifa World Cup in June.

According to a news report from Reuters Tzamarenda Naychapi, a priest who practices magic for controlling events for healing and divination let out a loud scream to force away evil spirits in the centre of the pitch at the Zentralstadion in Leipzig on Monday.

"I've come to Leipzig to purify this important place for the World Cup and to bring positive energy," said the 36-year-old.

"The World Cup will bring many people together, it is about people coming together and meeting each other," he added.

Ecuador surprised many by qualifying for the World Cup finals in Germany in June and have been drawn to play against the hosts, Costa Rica and Poland in the first stage of the competition.

They will play in three different stadiums while in Germany - Gelsenkirchen on Friday, June 9, Hamburg on Thursday, June 15 and in Berlin on Tuesday, June 20.
