Draw for experimental Ecuador
25/05/2006: Playing an experimental 4-3-3 formation, Ecuador were held to a 1-1 draw by Columbia in New York.
The game was the first of two in the US ahead of the finals which begin in Germany in June.
La Tri took the lead in the 52nd minute through a well-struck Segundo Castillo shot from the edge of the box.
A well-disciplined Columbian side equalised just three minutes later through Elkin Soto.
Goalscorer Castillo was happy with his goal but more pleased with the overall performance.
"Colombia are a great team and it is very important for us to play games like this to prepare us for the World Cup," said the El Nacional midfielder.
"I'm a very happy with the goal that I scored but I'm much more happy with the performance of the team. But we have to work a lot to correct the mistakes."
Coach Luis Fernando felt his side lacked a cutting edge in attack.
"I think we weren't clinical enough up front," he said.
"I liked the intensity of the game, because it is similar to a World Cup game. That is why I am happy. They ran a lot and they didn't stop".
