Domenech not happy top eight finish

29/06/2006: Coach Raymond Domenech says he would not be satisfied if France's World Cup campaign ends in a quarter final defeat against Brazil.

Les Bleus were not fancied to lift the trophy going into the tournament in Germany following disappointing 2002 World Cup and 2004 European Championship campaigns with many critics feeling the squad was too old.

However, after recovering from a slow start, the side have picked up and Tuesday's 3-1 second round win against Spain showed signs that they could be approaching top form at the right time.

The 1998 champions will meet Brazil in Frankfurt on Saturday with a place in the semi-finals up for grabs and Domenech is determined to progress after ruling out they have surpassed expectations by reaching the last eight.

He said: "I am surprised to hear people say that if we lose to Brazil in the quarter finals France has had a good World Cup. I think the opposite - it would mean that we had lost and that it would be an unsuccessful campaign.

"We are looking forward with confidence, and everyone is delighted to be in the last eight.

"Brazil have been considered favourites for 40 years - they are used to playing under that sort of pressure. People have been writing us off as underdogs for 90 years."
