Domenech backed over Claude controversy

04/09/2006: France coach Raymond Domenech has been backed by the FFF chairman over his controversial call-up of Claude Makelele.

The Chelsea midfielder announced his retirement from international football following France's heartbreaking World Cup final defeat against Italy in the summer.

But according to FIFA regulations, Domenech can still insist on Makelele's presence, and has done so, calling him up for the Europe 2008 qualifying double header against Georgia and Italy, in a repeat of the Germany final.

Makelele's club coach Jose Mourinho says the player is being treated like "a slave".

But the chairman of the France Football Federation, Jean-Pierre Escalettes, says Domenech has made a correct move.

"I have always said to Raymond 'you choose the best team considering the rules', he chose the best team considering the rules," he said.

"Time will pass by, talks will start, and we will find a solution without press communication.

"Claude is an extremely discreet and charming man. In his whole career he has never caused any trouble.

"He is unhappy to be the subject of controversy, let him settle the case.

"He doesn't have the best position, between the devil and the deep blue sea."

Italy enter Wednesday's qualifier off the back of a surprising 1-1 draw at home to Lithuania.
