England left ruing penalties.....again!

02/07/2006: Sven Goran Eriksson says England couldn't have 'done much more' after falling to Portugal on penalties in the quarter final.

England crashed out after a battling display with ten men following the sending off of Wayne Rooney after 62 minutes, signalling the end of Eriksson's reign.

It was deja vu for England as they fell to Portugal again and to Luiz Felipe Scolari for the third time, losing 3-1 on penalties in Gelsenkirchen.

Missed spot kicks from Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher led to another penalty nightmare for the Three Lions.

Eriksson said: "We practised penalties so much, I really don't know what more we could do about it.

"I was sure these players could get to the final and we should have done it.

"We gave a good performance but we're out and that's very painful. I'm sorry for the fans, who have been fantastic, that we couldn't give them a final."
