Defender reveals Spanish interest
18/06/2006: Ulises de la Cruz claims Villarreal are interested in him but he will wait until after World Cup 2006 before deciding on his future.
The 32-year-old Ecuador international, who is starring for his country at this summer's tournament in Germany, appears to be on his way out of Villa Park when his contract expires shortly after a disappointing past campaign in which he featured in only eight games and made just four starts.
De la Cruz claims a number of clubs, including Spanish outfit Villarreal, who are managed by his former coach at Deportiva Universitaria, Manuel Pellegrini, want to sign him.
However the player, who joined Villa in a £1.5million deal from Hibernian in 2002, appears to want to remain in England and could get the chance to put himself in the shop window if Ecuador and England meet in the second round tie this coming weekend.
Therefore, he is remaining patient before deciding where he will go in order to survey all his options and give other clubs the chance to join the race for his services.
He said: "An approach from Villarreal has always existed, but my contract with Aston Villa finishes next month.
"We will go into things and see what happens. There are many things that happen in life, I only ask God that he helps us continue in the World Cup and that we can continue enjoying these moments."
He added: "I am not looking to move for money. I just need to be playing first-team football. I know I am still capable of doing a job at Premiership level.
"I have loved my time with Villa. The last four years have been tremendous and I want the fans to know how happy I have been. However, the time has come for me to leave."
