Defeat out of the question

27/06/2006: Brazil star Roberto Carlos is full of confidence going into the last 16 clash with Ghana and says he cannot contemplate defeat.

The South American giants take on the Africans in Dortmund on Tuesday afternoon having won all three of their group games.

The reigning champions have showed glimpses of the form that made them most people's pre-tournament favourites for the title but have lacked consistency, with star players such as Ronaldo and Ronaldinho failing to hit the heights.

They face a Ghana side who shocked many pundits by qualifying from a group that included the USA, Italy and the Czech Republic and can boast a few world class players in their ranks.

Chelsea's Michael Essien is one such player although the midfielder is suspended from Tuesday's match, having picked up two yellow cards in the group stage of the tournament.

Whether or not Essien is in the opposition line-up, Real Madrid defender Carlos says he has no doubt that the Samba stars will progress to the quarter-finals and a showdown with either Spain or France.

"If I thought I was going to lose this match I'd pack my bags today and leave," he said. "It hasn't even crossed my mind about losing to Ghana.

"I have confidence in my team, in the tactics and in the strength of the squad. We've won all the tournaments that we have competed in.

"Against Japan we showed that Brazil could well be crowned world champions."
