Cruz out of England opener
24/05/2006: Striker Roque Santa Cruz will miss Paraguay's opening game against England having failed to recover sufficiently from tendinitis.
The Bayern Munich star has been struggling all season with the problem and the news is a shattering blow for Paraguay.
Coach Anibal Ruiz has optimistically stated he may be fit for their second game against Sweden.
"We have other options," Ruiz said.
"We want Roque to be 100 per cent ok."
Ruiz believes Santa Cruz, who has had two operations on his knee in the last 18 months, will be badly missed.
"The ideal thing is to have Roque on the team, because of his speed, his short-distance attacks and mid-range shots," Ruiz added.
With Paraguay supporters unable to see Roque Santa Cruz in his famous number 9 shirt they will see either Salvador Cabanas or Nelson Valdez in his place.
